A company was planning a Web site to promote Crabtree. But when Crabtree talked to Tech officials, he was told the Web site would be a violation of NCAA rules.

However, the site inadvertently went live. After it was taken down, Tech officials received an apology from the company but still self-reported the violation, which technically meant Crabtree was ineligible.

Texas Tech quashed speculation about the status of All-American wide receiver Mike Crabtree on Thursday, issuing a two-sentence statement indicating that he is in good standing.

The statement did not mention Crabtree by name.

"The university became aware of a possible compliance issue involving a football student athlete," said Tech faculty athletic representative Robert Baker. "We have looked into the matter and communicated with Big 12 and NCAA officials and found that there were no violations."

Before releasing the statement, Baker did not immediately return a phone message from the Avalanche-Journal.

Crabtree was seen earlier Thursday suited up and going to practice with his teammates.

Tech closed practices after Thursday as the Raiders go into game-week preparation mode. Actually, that’s already started. The Raiders simulated their usual Thursday practice, which includes working out in the stadium with an amped-up soundtrack blaring for a crowd-noise effect.

"It’s got chainsaws, woodpeckers, people scratching on chalkboards and all that," Leach told the audience, "so that players can’t talk among themselves and they have to execute their plays non-verbally."
